When the sun sets in the Karwendel ...
A famous folk song sung by Tyroleans since time immemorial describes the beauty of the Karwendel Mountains. Way back in 1928, this beautiful gift of nature was declared the first nature-sanctuary of Austria and hence has been preserved for our generation. Today we admire some of the original flora and fauna where humans decided to live humbly in harmony with nature.
With nearly 920 km² of virtually untouched landscape, the Karwendel range is one of the largest nature-protected zones of the Eastern Alps, 730 km² of which are located in Tyrol and 190 km² in Bavaria. This long border between steep mountain peaks and jagged cliffs was a virtually impregnable smuggler’s paradise for hundreds of years.

Nature- sanctuary and adventure world
Between the rivers Inn and Isar, Achensee and Seefelder Senke lies the Karwendel mountain range. A stone landscape inundated with forest and trekking paths, strewn patches of pasture with modern and traditional mountain huts. The Karwendel Alpine park is made up of several nature-protected zones and recreation areas, which create a buffer surrounding the original sanctuary.
To the north of Pertisau is the recreation area Achental-West. Gaisalm, which can only be accessed by ship or on foot, is situated in the middle of this zone. Barring this, the recreation area of Achental-West is a true retreat, as it is difficult to access.
The nature-protected zone Falzthurntal-Gerntal borders on the valley strip near the Achensee, directly on Pertisau. It envelops mainly the valleys of the Falzthurntal and the Gerntal, which can easily be accessed via asphalted roads. This easy accessibility makes the "Karwendel valleys" an ideal relaxation area for families, elderly people and nature lovers.
