When there's a thick layer of snow on the ground at cold times of the year and the Achensee region transforms into a winter wonderland, there is nothing more beautiful and romantic than getting wrapped up and walking along the shore of the lake, or around the Karwendel valleys, which are closed to traffic in winter. The local Alpine inns (Pletzach, Gern, Falzthurn, Gramai), as well as the Feilalm and the Rodlhütte Pertisau, are also open in winter and are a wonderful place to enjoy a hot cup of tea or a mulled wine after a walk through the wintry forest. There are a total of 150 km of cleared winter walking trails to explore in the Achensee region.
If you have a more independent spirit, you can also set out with your snow shoes and make your own path through the snow! Our top tip are the guided Trapper Tours offered by the Edelweiß Ski School (Sport Wöll), which offer the chance to learn some interesting facts about nature and the countryside and enjoy a traditionally prepared trapper meal at an Alpine hut, in addition to the physical exercise. The tour guides at the Post am See also offer a snow shoe walk once a week.
Or you can go for it and book a snow shoe walking week in winter. The end of January, when the white blanket still lies thick upon the trees and sun is just starting to get a little stronger, is definitely the best time to explore the Achensee region with your snow shoes.
